Profiting from Animal Welfare: an Animal-based Perspective
نویسندگان
چکیده
The animal welfare debate has been developing in the UK since the 18 century and for much of that time the emphasis has been on the use of legislation to protect animals. More recently in farm animals there has been a focus on using market-led approaches to improve animal welfare. In this paper we argue that there is a strong case for examining more closely supply-side solutions to improving animal welfare, in effect asking how much animal welfare can farmers’ afford to deliver. The answer appears to be more than some might think. Using a range of examples we illustrate that improving animal welfare need not penalise business returns and indeed may increase profits. A greater focus on delivering improved animal welfare within a competitive livestock industry would allow farmers to gain the initiative in the animal welfare debate. To realise this requires interdisciplinary research combining economic analysis with high quality scientific information on the animals’ welfare combined with effective knowledge exchange that positively influences farmer behaviour.

Decision-making on animal welfare issues requires a synthesis of information. For the assessment of farm animal welfare based on scientific information collected in a database, a methodology called 'semantic modelling' has been developed. To date, however, this methodology has not been generally applied. Recently, a qualitative Risk Assessment approach has been published by the European Food Sa...
متن کاملAnimal welfare: a complex domestic and international public-policy issue--who are the key players?
Animal-welfare issues are usually portrayed in the media in a black-and-white fashion, with simple, single-perspective solutions proposed for what are often, in fact, complex policy issues. In this article, we argue that animal welfare is a multifaceted international and domestic public-policy issue that must take account of not only scientific, ethical, and economic issues but also religious, ...
متن کاملIncorporating an Ethological Perspective to Improve Animal Welfare and Data Quality
Concern for animal welfare is nothing new. In 1959, two British scientists, Bill Russell and Rex Burch, famously presented an agenda now known as the three Rs for parsimonious use of animals in research: scientists would be diligent in searching to replace animal experiments with non-animal methods, refine experiments to eliminate suffering, and reduce the number of animals required in individu...
